I also recommend listening to the extended version on the Winter In Europe 1967 release. It has a dirty wailing sound that is great mixer for any scotch or rum based beverage.

Make a salad.

Street Piece (Alison Knowles, 1962)
Make something in the street and give it away.

Chair Piece for George Brect (Alison Knowles, 1965)
Before the performance, place an empty chair in the center aisle, equipped with a reading light and a book. If nobody has taken this seat by the intermission, one of the performers should do so.

Fall (Lee Heflin, date unknown)
Throw things that are difficult to throw because of their light weight.

Mechanical Fluxconcert (Richard Maxfield, date unknown)
Microphones are placed in the street, outside windows or hidden among the audience and sounds are amplified to the audience via public address system.

Say hello to every pretty girl you meet. If she replies with a smile, you get a point. The one with the most points wins.

Drink I (Ben Vautier, 1962)
While other pieces are being performed, one performer sits drinking in a corner of the stage. He gets drunk and starts being a nuisance.

Drink II (Ben Vautier, 1962)
Performers drink as much as they can drink, as fast as possible.

Telephone (Ben Vautier, 1962)
Using a telephone placed on stage with a monitor hooked up to a loudspear, the performer makes one of the following calls:
1) Call the police and talk for as long as possible.
2) Call the president of the country.
3) Call the local newspaper with false news.

Bird Call (Ken Friedman, 1992)
Make a telephone call to a bird. If you do not know a bird who has a telephone, make a telephone call in which you make bird noises.

Anatidaephobia is defined as a pervasive, irrational fear that one is being watched by a duck. The anatidaephobic individual fears that no matter where they are or what they are doing, a duck watches.

The symptoms of Anatidaephobia vary from person to person. Some people, when confronted with their fear, may feel slightly uncomfortable, become nauseated or begin to perspire. Others are so severely compromised by this phobia, that they experience crippling anxiety and/or panic attacks.

Other symptoms of Anatidaephobia can include:
• A Dry Mouth
• Gasping or Shortness of Breath
• Muscle Tension
• Overall Trembling
• Hyperventilation
• Feeling Out of Control
• Feeling Trapped and Unable to Escape
• Overwhelming Feeling of Impending Disaster

Trailer for A Face in the Crowd (1957) directed by Elia Kazan

Young Andy Griffith (his first starring role) gives an amazing performance as the anti-hero “Lonesome” Rhodes, a slick talking, guitar picking megalomaniac drifter who becomes an overnight sensation and is quickly caught up in the influence that comes along with the fame.. essentially predicting the role of the media, particularly television, in modern society and politics. It is hard to watch this film and ignore the similarities between the fictional character of Rhodes and modern day politickers like Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh. Anyone used to seeing him as the friendly TV sheriff will find him totally unrecognizable in this film.

At the very least film buffs need to see this for Kazan’s direction. Arguably one of the top directors of his time, his legacy has been somewhat tainted by the McCarthy hearings where he was one of the first people in Hollywood to name-names. When the Oscars presented him with a lifetime achievement award many people in the audience booed. Despite this reputation, many of his films such as On The Waterfront and A Face in the Crowd are well known “lefty” social commentaries that were years (if not decades) ahead of their time.

Go watch this movie! And then check out the 15 minute documentary that comes on the DVD.
